Matvision joins the CiSMA Project to advance circular, high-quality steel production

The CiSMA Project is leading the way toward a more circular and sustainable steel industry in Europe. Matvision has joined this initiative to share its expertise in AI-based metal sorting and characterization. Together, they aim to improve scrap metal recycling and support the creation of 100% recycled steel.

This will help to cut down emissions by more than 75 percent and use up to 100 percent scrap loads.

What the CiSMA Project Seeks to Achieve

According to its recent announcement on LinkedInthe CiSMA Project promotes a circular economy through the production of high-quality recycled steels from post-consumer scrap using Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF).

The project brings together 13 European partners who work hand in hand to design practical, low-emission steel production methods. Its goal is to move away from traditional blast furnace processes and instead rely on 100% scrap-based steel production through EAF technology.

This shift not only cuts CO₂ emissions by more than 75 percent but also helps make steelmaking more resource-efficient. Moreover, CiSMA aims to prove that recycled steel can match the quality of conventional materials used in the automotive and industrial sectors.

In short, CiSMA is setting a new benchmark for a cleaner and more competitive European steel industry.

Matvision’s Role in the Project

In its own LinkedIn postMatvision announced its active participation in CiSMA. The company is developing new methods to characterize and sort copper-containing scrap metals, which remain a major challenge for recyclers.

Copper impurities can negatively affect the quality of recycled steel. To address this, Matvision uses AI-driven sorting systems and advanced imaging technology. These tools identify and separate unwanted materials, improving both feedstock purity and traceability.

As a result, the company contributes directly to CiSMA’s main goal: producing 100% recycled, high-performance steel. Matvision’s innovations show how artificial intelligence can make recycling smarter, faster, and more sustainable.

Conclusion

The CiSMA Project and Matvision together demonstrate the power of innovation and collaboration. CiSMA provides a vision for the future of European steel, while Matvision delivers the AI technology to make that vision real.

Furthermore, this partnership highlights how science, technology, and sustainability can work hand in hand. As CiSMA progresses, it brings Europe one step closer to a decarbonized and circular steel ecosystem, where every material can be reused, refined, and reimagined.
